Why I decided to learn English

This year, I’ll be 30 years old. I wonder how to survive next decade as a software engineer and I have realized that it is important to acquire the ability to work in an environment where English is required.

It seems the trend of low economic growth, decreasing birthrate and aging population in Japan is going to continue in the near future and I’m afraid that I will lose job oppotunities if I use only Japanese and stay inside Japan.

Originally, I had set a goal to learn English at the beginning of 2019 but I didn’t do anything special, so I wanted to set up an enviroment that forces me to learn English.

Why Gaba?

Because great Googlers like kumagi-san take lessons at Gaba :).

I had other choices (Berlitz and Aeon) but I decided to take lessons at Gaba. I heard that course fee at Berlitz is slightly higher because they provides lessons at private room, and at Aeon, group lessons are basic.

Before application for the course

First, I took a trial lesson. The content of the trial lesson is almost the same as normal one.

After the trial lesson, my English skill was estimated by the instructor (my level was 4th to last) and the lesson plan is considered by the counsellor.

I didn’t apply that day and a few days later I got a follow-up phone call from the counseller. I felt it’s a little persistent.

How much?

I decided to take a course that I can get a payback (¥100,000) from the national government if several conditions are satisfied.

As written in the page above, the course costs ¥561,000 per 75 lessons. If I can get a ¥100,000 payback, the fee per one lesson is about ¥6,200.

I added more lessons in addition to it, so the total cost including many others becomes quite large …

How to proceed with the lesson

The lesson is 40 minutes and usually carried out with a textbook.
You can ask the insturctor to do the lesson with the different materials if you want, but I haven’t tried yet.

You can get a feedback from the instructor after the lesson.
I often get “Work on response time.”. It is difficult to come up with words to say immediately.

I think it is important to prepare for the lesson in advance.
Otherwise, too much time is spent on checking the meaning of words and phrases and I can’t spend time on speaking.

In addition, I won’t be able to speak English just because of taking lessons, so I have to spend more time on writing or speaking English outside of lessons.

I’ll try my best to advance my career to recover this large investment on learning English.

英語を学ぶ理由

実は今年30歳になります。そこで今後10年をソフトウェアエンジニアとしてどう戦っていくかということを考えると、英語が必要な環境でも働けるようになることが必要なのではないかと思いました。
日本のここ数十年の低経済成長と少子高齢化の流れは今後も継続するでしょうし、日本語しか話せず日本国内でしか働けないのはリスクだと思ったためです。

もともと2019年の目標の1つとして英語を習得することを挙げていましたが結局何にも取り組みませんでした。なので無理にでもやらざるをやらない仕組みにしたかったという理由もあります。

なぜGaba？

kumagiさんのようなGooglerが通っていらっしゃるから。。という冗談はさておき、Gabaの体験レッスンを受けてそのままGabaに決めました。

他にはベルリッツやイーオンなどの選択肢もありましたが、ベルリッツはレッスンが完全個室だからかGabaよりも少し高く、イーオンはグループレッスンが基本なので（プライベートレッスンもあるようですが）候補から外しました。ただ他の体験レッスンを受けるのが面倒だったという説もあります。

入会するまでの流れ

まず体験レッスンを申し込みました。体験レッスンでは通常とほぼ同じ内容のレッスンがおこなわれます。体験レッスンで大体この人の英語力はこのくらいのレベルだというのが見積もられ、そのレベルに応じてどういうレッスンプランにするかをカウンセラーと話し合います。ちなみに僕のレベルは10段階中下から4番目でした。

レッスンプランや料金を提示してもらってその場では申し込まずに保留していると、フォローアップの電話がかかってきます。向こうとしてはなんとしても入会させたいので結構粘られます。ただいきなり電話がかかってくるのではなく何日後に電話をかけますとあらかじめ知らせてもらえる分まだマシですが。

料金は？

一般教育訓練給付制度コースにしました。一般教育訓練給付制度とは厚生労働省が実施している制度で、いろいろ条件はありますが端的にいうと国から10万円もらえる制度です。

上のページにも書いていますが、一般教育訓練給付制度コースはレッスン75回で56万1000円なので、10万円返ってきたとするとレッスン1回あたり約6200円です。僕はこれにさらにレッスンを追加した（ちなみに追加レッスンだと1回あたりのレッスン料は通常より少なくできる）ので、テキスト代などもろもろを合わせるとトータルでは結構な額に。。

ちなみに、Gabaのコースの説明ページはレッスン単価が税抜で書いていて、少しでも安く見せようとしていてちょっと印象が悪いです。

レッスンの進め方

レッスンは1回40分で、基本的にはテキストに沿って進めていきます。希望すれば通常とは違う内容もお願いできるようですが、まだやったことはありません。

レッスンが終わるとフィードバックがもらえます。僕の場合は大体「発話のレスポンスが遅い」という評価が多いです。パッと英語が口から出てこないのが改善ポイントですね。

まだ数回しか受けていませんが、次のレッスンでやりそうな範囲を予習しておくのが大事だなと思っています。でないとテキストの内容の把握や単語の意味の確認で時間を使ってしまい、肝心の話す時間が減ってしまいます。

あと、レッスンを受けてさえいれば英語がスムーズに使えるようにはなることはないと思うので、レッスン以外の時間でも英語に触れる時間を増やす必要があります。

英語力向上に結構な額を投資したので、回収できるようなキャリアを積んでいけるよう頑張ります。
